Black Beauty

Black Beauty is a novel(children's classic)written in 1877 by Anna Sewell about the life of a horse from his carefree days as a foal on an English farm enjoying the countryside with his mother, to his sale and his career pulling cabs and wagons in London. Along the way, he meets with many hardships and recounts many tales of cruelty and cowardice, as well as heroism, courage and kindness.

By telling the story of a horse's life of in the form of an autobiography, Anna Sewell broke new ground. It was unusual to let the narrator of a story be a non-human, but more importantly her sympathetic portrayal of the plight of working animals led to a vast outpouring of concern for animal
welfare.

Hamper

A Hamper is a primarily British term for a wicker basket, usually large, that is used for the transport of items, often food. In America, the term hamper generally refers to a household receptacle for dirty clothing, regardless of its composition, i.e- "a laundry hamper".

The contents of the hamper may be decanted regularly into larger containers or a cart, wagon or truck. The open ventilation and the sturdiness offered by a hamper has made it suitable for the transport of food, hence the use of the picnic hamper. At one time it was common for laundry services to leave a large basketwork container with a lid which is now commonly referred to as a clothes hamper. The same type of container would be used to return clean clothing, which would be put away by the laundry service and the empty container left in place of the full container for later pickup. This type of daily or bi-daily hamper service was most common with Chinese laundry services in 19th century England and America.

Jack O'Lantern

A jack-o'-lantern is typically a carved pumpkin. It is associated chiefly with the holiday Halloween, and was named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs, called jack-o'-lantern. In a jack-o'-lantern, typically the top is cut off, and the inside flesh then scooped out; an image, usually a monstrous face, is carved onto the outside surface, and the lid replaced. At night a light (commonly a candle) is placed inside to illuminate the effect. The term is not particularly common outside North America, although the practice of carving lanterns for Halloween is.

(Season 4-11)

Samantha: Look at that one. Isn't it adorable?
Carrie: Which one?

Samantha: The red one, in the middle. I love it.

Carrie: The Birkin bag? Really? That's not even your style.

Samantha: No, honey, it's not so much the style. It's what carrying it means.

Carrie: It means you're out 4,000 bucks.

Samantha: Exactly. When I'm trolling around town with that bag, I'll know I've made it.

Carrie: Okay, let’s go. The visiting hours are over.

Samantha: Bye-bye, Birkin.

Carrie: I'm going with Miranda when she goes.

Samantha: Good. I was alone and it was awful.

Carrie: Why didn't you ask somebody to go with you?

Samantha: It's not the kind of thing you list on the dorm activities board.

Carrie: I lied to Aidan about having one. I don’t know. It just kind of came out. And the thing is, I think he seemed relieved, relieved that he could still think of me in a certain way. I don't know why I lied to him.

Samantha: Maybe you still want him to think of you in a certain way. It happened. You made the right decision at the time.

Carrie: yeah, I know. But you know, I never told the guy or anything.

Samantha: You can't go down that road. Did you really want to have a child with a guy who serves burgers on roller-skates?

Carrie: I could have a 13-year-old child!

Samantha: Yes, you could.

Carrie: But then I wouldn't have known you. Can you imagine it?

Samantha: No, I can't.

Carrie: I should have told Aidan.

Samantha: Coulda, woulda, shoulda!
